Each year, Leadership Ohio honors a single individual with its “Leader Among Leaders” award. This award recognizes that even among the best of leaders there is a leader that stands out. The individual bestowed this award is a member of the current year cohort and has been selected by the cohort for this distinguished honor. Selection of this individual is the current cohort’s declaration that this leader represents both the best of their cohort and their definition of a leader. Furthermore, the selection is a statement that throughout the year the individual has demonstrated a commitment to:

  • Bringing and building positive energy through every interaction.

  • Serving and/or inspiring others.

  • Building value-added and productive connections amongst the cohort itself, and,

  • Demonstrating passion in making Ohio the best place to live and work.

Recent praise for Barnstorming Ohio:

"David Giffels is becoming one of the really invaluable American reporters. With a sharp comic eye for mid-American idiosyncrasies that recalls Thurber or Keillor, he also has a political conscience, and consciousness, that allows him to illuminate, with gentle acuity, many vexed corners in our national debate, from pro sports to strip malls. He is one of those rare writers who gives us truth without sentiment or rhetoric, and I never read him without pleasure, and a feeling that I now understand my country better than I did before."―Adam Gopnik, author of A Thousand Small Sanities

"Akron writer David Giffels decides to learn what Ohioans are like today....The people speak, and he listens."―Akron Beacon Journal

"Giffels... writes gracefully at every stop and actively seeks pockets of sunlight amid the gloom....An affectionate, realistic survey of a state coming back from the brink."―Kirkus Reviews

Statement from the Leadership Ohio Board of Trustees

If you want to change the world, you need to know the world. Today’s protests in the aftermath of the deaths of George Floyd and many other black Americans while in police custody have forced uncomfortable conversations.  It has given Americans of all backgrounds time to confront the legacy of four centuries of racism in America and the unfinished work in our country to live up to the high moral standard that all men and women are created equal. Black lives do, indeed, matter. At the same time, we recognize that the vast majority of the men and women who dedicate their careers to law enforcement do so for the right reasons and proudly serve their communities. These conversations are long overdue as are reforms. We are at a tipping point that will put some of us in uncomfortable positions, requiring us to confront privilege often taken for granted. For others, this will be a time for newfound growth and empowerment. We can all shape our future, even if in some small way. Leadership Ohio strives to be one part of the solution.

For more than 25 years a new Leadership Ohio class has come together each year to engage our state’s leaders, exploring the challenges and opportunities in our Ohio communities. The 2020 class of Leadership Ohio is loaded with a diverse group of community and business leaders from across Ohio. We are grateful to them for the leadership they are already demonstrating in their communities and their Leadership Ohio experience promises to be unlike any before. We have all witnessed the enormous challenges this year has revealed just in its first six months. Now is the time for leadership – within all of us – to create opportunities for change and community empowerment.

Commitment Statement: Leadership Ohio is committing to confront racism with truth and lead Ohio in embracing our diverse community by educating and supporting our members to foster diversity, equality and inclusion as our core values.

Michael S. Allio

In the fall of 2019, our friend and classmate, Ian Schwarber, passed away suddenly. Leadership Ohio and the Class of 2019 have since created a scholarship to be awarded to an Akron area resident accepted to the Class of 2020 in his memory. The scholarship was envisioned to support someone with similar entrepreneurial beliefs and soul, and strong innovative dreams and ideas, dynamic traits in the spirit of Ian.

In Ian’s honor, we are delighted to announce Michael S. Allio as the 2020 recipient of the Ian Schwarber Memorial Scholarship. Learn more about Michael below, and stay tuned for a special feature about this outstanding leader in the coming weeks.

Michael S. Allio, Founder and President, Saint James Therapeutics, MA Workwear, LLC, The L4 Project

Michael S. Allio graduated from Loyola University Chicago’s School of Marketing Communications in 2006. Since graduation, Allio has developed a successful and tenured track record of leading sales teams, bringing new products to market and giving back to his community. Within the past six years, Allio has built three new start-up businesses within the health care, eCommerce and non-profit sectors. In addition, Allio has developed a deep passion for supporting community-based services and social causes within the Greater-Akron area.

In 2017, Allio’s wife Laura Ritter-Allio was diagnosed with breast cancer just seven months after giving birth to their first and only child, James. After a long and courageous battle, Laura passed away on January 23rd, 2019. In an effort to preserve his wife’s legacy, Allio created The L4 Project, a socially conscious clothing brand which raises money for local nonprofits through the sale of merchandise and apparel. The brand recently launched its first major collaboration with The Boys & Girls Club of Western Reserve and has received both local and national attention.

In 2018, Allio and his wife Laura began laying the foundation for a new venture, Saint James Therapeutics, which seeks to develop novel remedies and consumer-based products aimed at offsetting the painful side effects associated with commonly prescribed chemotherapy treatments. Saint James Therapeutics is set to begin their first clinical trial by the end of 2020 with continued aspirations of developing hyper focused solutions that ease a cancer patients journey from diagnosis to complete remission.

In 2019, Allio was awarded with the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce’s “30 For The Future” Award for his outstanding work as a business leader, entrepreneur and influential trendsetter within the industry.

Allio currently resides in Copley, Ohio with his 3-year old son, James.
